L to R (back) Ed Allen, Fred Spencer, Murdock Cunningham, Richard Looms, ART, Bill Stanton, Gordon McLean, Bernard Kuhn (Front) Paul Worden, Bill Furniss, Francis Sovinsky, Paul Schnitzen, Russell Stickney, John Fitzgerald, Tom Barry With John Sidey and Al Dimon graduating Art started with John Fitzgerald at center, Francis Sovinsky and Capt. Paul Schnitzen at guards and Tom Barry and Russell Stickney at forward. The season opened with an easy win at Newark Valley(NV) 35-14 with Stickney(16) and Schnitzen(10) leading the scoring. Waverly easily beat last year’s nemesis Troy 36-6 and 35-10, but lost twice to both Sayre and Canton. Two wins over Towanda closed the league play out at 4-4. Non-league wins over NV, alumni, Yanussis’, and Elmira Business College closed the season at 8-4. The NY State playoffs started with a tough Owego squad that took the Southern Counties title in a walk. The game held at Ithaca proved to be exciting going into overtime with Waverly outscoring Owego 8-1 in the last quarter. Waverly pulled the game out 25-23 with John Fitgeralds hoop the only score in OT. Next Waverly beat Moravia for the Western AAA Class B crown 31-23 again with a strong 4th quarter and the 2nd game in a row that Willie Furniss had scoring honors(7 then 10 pts). The finals saw Waverly lead at the half 6-4 and again at after the 3rd quarter 11-7. Delhi the Eastern champ refused to give up and outscored the Red & White 10-1 in the final quarter and win the championship 17-12. This was Art’s final game coaching Waverly. His total Waverly varsity record was 25-9.
