From L-R (Back): Bill Furniss, Richard Looms, Richard Carlin, Art, John Fitzgerald, Tom Barry (Front): Allen Dimon, Paul Schnitzen, John Sidey, Russel Stickney, Francis Sovinsky
This was Art’s first varsity basketball coaching assignment in Waverly for the 1935-36 season. The backbone of the team was John Sidey at center where he has starred for the 2 previous campaigns. Al Dimon and Paul Schnitzen as guards, Russell Stickney and Bernard Kuhl at forwards. The opening game was at Owego and WHS was down 18-13 going into the last quarter. Captain John Sidey lead the way with 12 points for Art’s first coaching victory. The home & away league games against Towanda, Sayre, Athens, Canton and 1 game at Troy were all victories until big Bernard Kuhl missed the last two games as a result of a heart attack. Troy won the last game forcing a playoff for the SVIAA title, Waverly winning the first half crown and Troy the last with the 24-19 last game victory over the Red & White. Troy won the playoff 19-11 ending the season for Waverly. The season also had split games with Owego, each winning on the road, a win against Newark Valley and a loss to the Alumni 28-27. The final totals were 9-1 in the regular season league, 12-3 in the regular season and 13-4 overall including the alumni & playoff losses. A great start for Art.
