Chenango Valley (CV) 1961-1962 (5-13, 5-14) This proved to be Art’s worst coaching record of all 26 seasons. All the starters from last years team graduated so it would take a couple of seasons to rebuild. The season ended with 12 straight losses after a 5-2 start for the campaign. A bright point was winning the Sidney Christmas Tournament for the 3rd straight year, with Dale Caughy MVP, then the losing streak started. CV beat Homer 50-48, UE 46-43, JC 45-43, ME 53-43 and Sidney 59-46. The only close losses were two to North, 53-43 and 50-44, Owego 58-55 and Sidney 44-42. Tom Macko and Kevin Slocum got playing time as sophmores. Dick Leahy was a consisrent scorer. Bob Brown, Bill Hardy, Dale Caughey and Ed Krajca were seniors on this club. CV again lost to Vestal in the Sect 4 playoffs, 62-31 to end the season. Art started working on a plus minus point system to emphasize each players individual contribution to victory. Plus: made shots and free throws, steals, assist, blocked shot, tie up, taking a charge. Minuses: turn over, charging foul, bad pass, violation, missed shots and free throws, tie ups. It was several years before he rolled it out to stress teamwork. It worked!
